Kate Nash - Foundations

Not only is Kate Nash is highly similar to our artist, Ellie Tanner, but the song itself is also similar to our chosen song.

This particular video features the artist within the narrative which is something we would also like to do in our video. The video also features a constant cut away from the narrative, whilst still being relevant to the story and parallel to the music.

Generally, as outlined by carol vernallis, there is an even balance between narrative and performance, this video is successful in sustaining this balance whilst overlapping the two at the same time.

Every shot in this video is static, however all of the narrative has been shot with a hand held camera to add to the realism. A constant use of static shots shows the song is static and there is no progression within the storyline. The video starts with quick shots of all the inanimate objects around the house appearing to be settled, this later changes as the song progresses into arguments and stop animation is used to represent the dispute between the couple. The bowling ball hitting the shoes as the music comes in is a code for the first sign of disruption in the relationship, before hand the shoes were lined up perfectly but afterwards they were in complete disarray.

This video is filled with visual representations of what the relationship is really like. When they're at the table playing a card game everything seems fine above the table but underneath they're having a battle with their feet. This is directly related to relationship in the sense that everything is fine on the surface but inside there is power struggle going on between the two. Although close-ups have been used to show the artist's dominance in the video.

Something i enjoy in this video is the cuts away from the narrative that are still parallel to the music, they take the audience out of the narrative whilst still being relevant. Another feature that is ralrely seen in film but always seen in music videos is the bisecting of the body which is a recurring theme within this particular video.

The setting for this video is simplistic yet still manages to create an amazing video, the use of a rustic house rather than a flashy one matches the style of the video and the humdrum life they appear to lead.
