Conventions of music video

Music videos follow an entirely different formula to film and television. First of all they can be split into conventional and original;

Conventional videos:

-Follow a formula

-Have obvious codes that are well established

-Have typical conventions that adhere to the audiences expectations

e.g the audiences expectations of a rap video would be;

-Excessive bling

-Girls in skimpy clothes

-Cars

-Baggy clothing

-Money

-Rapping into the camera

-Dance routines

-Titillation

-Set in a club or bedroom

Original videos:

-Suprise and shock the audience

-Use striking imagery to engage the audience

-Avoid formulaic approaches

There is also a difference between editing styles. Conventional film editing must follow chronological order, be coherant and follow continuity. Whereas a music video has quick cuts, temproal leaps, lack of continuity, use a series of images/a montage and must create a sense of impression.
